BİTUMEN ADDİTİVE TO PREVENT PEELİNG AND INCREASE ADHESİON
Bitumen additive increase peel strength; they are used in Bituminous Hot Mix and Bituminous Surface Coatings to reduce moisture-related damage to the aggregate and water-based damage to the surface as a result of external factors. Anti-stripping additives and aggregates are alkaline or acidic. This chemical situation determines the additive - aggregate performance. However, the use of correct additives increases the bond strength between the bitumen and the aggregate, providing stronger adhesion, which increases the durability of the coating. The use of amine-based additives is quite common around the world. In addition to amine additives, phosphoric acid, organic esters and silane based additives have recently been used.
Bituminous coatings are the preferred road surface coatings all over the world due to their cost, ease of maintenance and repair, and comfort. If we consider the causes of deterioration on the surface of coatings, insufficient adhesion and peeling come first. In surface coating and hot mixtures, water can separate bitumen from aggregate as a result of some factors. This situation cannot be prevented once it starts, and the traffic loads on the road further accelerate this occurrence.
The rate of peeling occurring; The paving compression degrees of asphalt vary depending on the aggregate type, bitumen viscosity and structure. Whether asphalt is applied in hot or cold weather is not a direct reason for the use of anti-stripping additives. However, in regions with extreme heat and intense humidity, more attention should be paid to the additive used when applying surface coating. Because choosing the wrong additive or using high dosages of additives reduces the softening point of bitumen.
As a result, the peeling situation encountered in many asphalt pavements can be prevented to a large extent by using additives that are compatible with the aggregate and do not disrupt the structure of the bitumen, in proportions determined by experiments. Homogeneous mixing of the additive with bitumen is another important criterion in terms of performance.
