ANTI-STRIPPING AGENT AND ADHESION ENHANCING ASPHALT ADDITIVE (DOP)

Dop, as it is known in our country, that is a stripping strength increasing asphalt additive, is used for reducing the damages of moisture on the aggregate on the bituminous hot mixture and bituminous surface coatings and water-based damages occurred on the surface caused by external factors. Anti-stripping additives and aggregates are alkali or acidic. This chemical condition is decisive in the performance of additive - aggregate. However, the use of the correct additive can increase the strength of the bond between the aggregate and the bitumen, which may result in stronger adhesion and prolonging the life of the coating. The use of these amine-based additives is widespread throughout the world.

Bituminous coatings are the preferred road surface coatings all over the world in terms of cost, maintenance and ease of repair. If we address the causes of deterioration on the surface of bituminous coatings, insufficient adhesion and stripping-induced ones are the leading causes. As a result of some factors in surface coating and hot mixtures, water can separate bitumen from aggregate. This situation cannot be prevented once it has begun and the traffic loads on the road accelerate this formation even more.

The rate at which stripping occurs varies depending on temperature, aggregate type and viscosity of bitumen and its components. The fact that the application of asphalt is carried out in hot or cold weather is not a direct reason for the use of antistripping additives. Those applying the surface coating in areas with excessive heat and high humidity should use high viscosity providing additives instead of viscosity reducing additives. Since the type of bitumen used to coat the surface is more viscous than the hot mixture, using additives that lower the viscosity of the bitumen will further prolong the already long drying period in hot and humid areas. As a result, the stripping state encountered in many coatings can be prevented to a great extent by the use of aggregate and bitumen-appropriate additives in the correct dosages and by strictly providing a homogeneous mixture with bitumen.
